Preparation for Severe Storms
12th December 2011

Winds of up to 70 mph are expected to hit parts of the UK over the next few days so we have provided some advice about storms below. Storms or gales are one of the most common causes of damage and disruption in the UK. The majority of damage reports come from domestic houses. The average cost of damage nationally each year is in excess of £300m. The following provides some simple advice on how to prepare for a severe storm:

Before the storm

- Secure loose objects in your garden as these could be blown through windows

- Close and securely fasten doors and windows

- Park vehicles in a garage or otherwise keep them clear of trees, walls and fences

- Stay clear of chimneys if their stacks are tall or in poor condition.

During the storm

- Stay indoors as much as possible

- If you go out, keep away from the sheltered side of boundary walls and fences - if they fail, they will collapse on this side

- Take care when driving on exposed routes such as bridges or high open roads

- Slow down and be aware of side winds, particularly if you are towing or driving a high sided vehicle

- Do not park cars or stand near any seafront areas.

After the storm

- Do not touch any electrical or telephone cables that have been blown down

- Do not walk close to walls, fences and trees as they may have been weakened

- Make sure any vulnerable neighbours or relatives are safe.
