Preparing for a Journey

- Clear snow from windows and roof

- Keep to main roads if possible

- Allow for extended stopping distances on slippery roads

- Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to arrive

- Carry a fully charged mobile phone

- Listen to local travel reports.

Vehicle Emergency Kit

Sunglasses for the glare off the snow.

What to do it you break down

- If you can, get your vehicle off the road, as far to the left hand side as possible

- Warn other drivers using your hazard lights

- Put on a reflective jacket if available

- Get out of the car if you fear it will be struck by other vehicles

- Stand to the side of the vehicle, not in front or behind it

- If on a motorway, retreat behind the barrier and up the bank
